Rare film of Elgar talking and then conducting the trio of his Pomp and Circumstance March no.1 at the opening of EMI's Abbey Road studios in London on 12 November 1931.Elgar's words to the orchestra before he begins conducting are as follows: "Morning, gentlemen. Glad to see you all. Very light programme this morning. Please play this tune as though you've never heard it before."

Jan 16, 2010 - There you are... the great man conducting. Imagine if we could see him conducting his 2nd Symphony?
Reynartthefox Says:
Jan 16, 2010 - @elgar34 : wouldn't that be something!
elgar34 Says:
Jan 16, 2010 - Oh indeed. I'm listening to the 2nd Sym right now. Music making on the highest plane. But Elgar not conducting... I settle for Vernon Handley.
bigmouthfrog2009 Says:
Jan 17, 2010 - This film was made on 12 November 1931 at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, and the conductor IS Sir Edward Elgar!!!I don't know who you are, Elgar34, but if you don't recognize Elgar when you see him, then I will contribute to a pair of extra-powerful reading glasses for you. Please don't lecture the public in your patronising tone when you don't have a bloody clue about our great national composer!!!
Reynartthefox Says:
Jan 17, 2010 - @bigmouthfrog2009: just acting as moderator here! I think you must have misunderstood Elgar34's comment which was actually a reply to my comment when Elgar34 mentioned they were listening to Vernon Handley conducting the 2nd symphony (having in a previous comment said they'd love to see Elgar himself conducting the 2nd symphony). Unfortunately it's not always clear on YouTube which comments are directed at which people hence the confusion, but I'm sure Elgar34 is a die hard Elgar fan!
Reynartthefox Says:
Jan 17, 2010 - @elgar34: Do you know Barbirolli's wonderful interpretation of the 2nd symphony with the Halle? His conducting of the 2nd symphony slow movement in particular is amazing (and Elgar himself was a big admirer of the then young John Barbirolli!).N.B. to avoid misunderstandings (see other comments on this page) I'd recommend placing the @ symbol and then the user name you're replying to before any reply comment or a war could accidentally be started!
elgar34 Says:
Jan 17, 2010 - @Reynartthefox: thanks for that. bigmouthfrog2009 was a bit rude, but I guess he misinterpreted my post. An apology might not hurt. I am VERY much a die hard Elgar fan -not much I do not know about MY national composer- and I have many recordings and books to back it up. BTW, Barbirolli's 1970 recording of the 1st Sym is a favourite.
Reynartthefox Says:
Jan 17, 2010 - @elgar34: I'm sure bigmouthfrog2009 didn't mean to be rude to such a genuine Elgar fan as yourself (I've made similar mistakes in the past because of the sometimes confusing positioning of comments on YouTube!) and actually his comment about buying you extra powerful reading glasses was quite funny, if misdirected! It's just great to know so many people are this passionate today about one of the great geniuses in all music!
elgar34 Says:
Jan 17, 2010 - @Reynartthefox: elsewhere bigmouthfrog accused me of being from a 'third world' country, so what would I know. Well I'm currently living and working in Malta, but I'm British through and through, have the passport to prove it. We obviously all love Elgar dearly, and bigmouthfrog should join us, that's a plan, is it not? Cheers to you and bigmouthfrog...

Jan 18, 2010 - The Moderator's point is well taken, and I tender my profound apologies to Elgar34. I see that his comments refer to the conductor of the Second Symphony. I have deeply wrongs you, dear chap, and I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me?
